New Year, New Barn

I can’t believe it’s been almost three months since I last blogged. The time has flown by and there’s so much to get caught up on. But instead of trying to publish one long “catch up” blog post, I’m going to try and make a few blog posts close together and catch up on things that way.

Our biggest item, literally, is our new barn:

Studs set for the barn.

This barn will be used primarily for storing round bales of hay. Right now the bales are wrapped and stored outside and will be better inside.

Ready for the roof.

Part of the barn will also be used for storing gates and pen panels and other stuff that needs a home. I can think of a lot of stuff that I could use the space for.

Got the roof on.

From start to finish it took the builders a week, maybe 10 days. It really went up fast.

Two big sliding doors on this side.

This end has two big sliding doors for easy access with the tractor and round bales. I could fit a lot of sheep in this barn :-) .

One big sliding door on the side.

This barn will actually free up space in the other barn for more area for lambing/kidding. You can never have too many barns!

A people door on the end.

This barn will also give me space in the other barn for a shearing area (hopefully). It will take some time to get things rearranged and situated. But in the meantime, it’s nice to imagine what I could do will the barn space.

Godspeed and Happy Landings,
Carol

Smitten by the Kittens

Snow Flower and Ling Ling

After six months of my ‘feral kitty domestication’ project, Snow Flower and Ling Ling have said good bye to life in the hay barn. After their ‘spay day’ two weeks ago they took up residency in a nice quiet, warm corner of the dining area. Well, they actually spend the night in their roomy large dog crate that looks more like a kitty fun house. During the day or rather for chunks of supervised time, they get to run the length of the kitchen, living room, and hallway. It may be a year or so before they get introduced to the bedroom and my two fiber rooms (that will be VERY supervised). Continue reading

Shooting, Shearing, and Shepherding

Lavender from my garden.

I can’t believe September (and half of October) has come and gone without a blog post. How time flies! Since my last post a lot has been going on around here.

Typically I’m not an advocate of firearms…they’re too loud, too powerful, too dangerous. It’s nothing political, it’s just that I never had the need to use them and in my quest to live a peaceful, quiet life firearms just don’t fit in. But I also believe they do serve a purpose especially when shepherds need to protect their flocks from lions and tigers and bears! That said, I recently gave in and took a safety course and learned how to handle and shoot firearms. Continue reading
