After six months of my ‘feral kitty domestication’ project, Snow Flower and Ling Ling have said good bye to life in the hay barn. After their ‘spay day’ two weeks ago they took up residency in a nice quiet, warm corner of the dining area. Well, they actually spend the night in their roomy large dog crate that looks more like a kitty fun house. During the day or rather for chunks of supervised time, they get to run the length of the kitchen, living room, and hallway. It may be a year or so before they get introduced to the bedroom and my two fiber rooms (that will be VERY supervised).
Snow Flower seems to be like 98% blind. With only one eye that is visibly damaged she still gets around very well. The vet said the one eye has some type of cornea issue and we’re using eye drops for a while to see if it helps. Unfortunately she may lose her eye, but time will tell. It sure doesn’t stop her from doing pretty much everything kitties do.
Sister Ling Ling still has a feral streak in her. If i put a soft mesh harness on her with a long leather shoelace attached, she seems to allow me to get close enough to her to catch her when it’s time to go back to the fun house. Without the mesh harness her feral streak kicks in and she stays crouched down in the corner and quickly runs here and there avoiding me. However, in the crate I can pick her up, pet her, she purrs, and seems to generally like the attention….but let her loose without the harness and it takes more than an hour to out smart her. I think she’ll come around though.
During their afternoon nap, the kitties’ mom, Puff, came up to the glass and peered in at them. She’s done this a few times. It’s heartwarming to know that she’s sort of checking to see that they’re o.k. She doesn’t stay long because as soon as she sees movement in the house she bolts and runs back to the barn.
Now that I’ve spent the last two weeks kitty sitting and getting them into a routine it’s back to business with my spinning homework.
I’m turning into a total cat woman!
